One of my favorite stories about Steve is that he spent a couple of years in high school working with his dad on a "hot rod" from the 1950s that was old enough to not require seat belts or many other safety devices. We went to lunch one day after school, and Steve offered to drive, which terrified me, but I went along. However, I needed to visit my credit union to get money to pay, and because I was a military dependent, it was on Moffett Field (the place with the blimp hangers in Mountain View). When we got to the front gate, Steve and his hot rod made the guards really happy. Both of them did a 360 turn and said versions of "wow [expletive] cool" before directing us into the visitor parking lot. Since Steve was not military, he could not bring his hot rod onto the base, so we had to walk the rest of the way, but the guards made it clear that they thought his car project was super cool.
