Obituary of Maria P. Jimenez

Maria Padilla Jimenez, 87, passed away peacefully on the 14th of August, 2020, with her loving family by her side, at home in Castroville, California. She was born on December 5, 1932 in Aguascalientes, Mexico, as the eldest daughter to Francisco Padilla and Melecia Cruz Padilla.

Maria grew up in the Districto Federal, Mexico. She attended school until 3rd grade then started working in order to help support the family. She never went back to school, and continued to help support the family until the time of her marriage.

In 1947, she immigrated to the United States along with the rest of the Padilla family by crossing the border in Texas. Maria and her family then became migrant farm workers, following the crops throughout the southern United States and Midwest. The family eventually settled in Castroville and became lifelong contributors to the community.

Maria married Rafael Jimenez in 1960 in Castroville, California. They were happily married for 60 years and had just celebrated their anniversary with family and friends this past February. Maria was a member of various organizations in the community. At one time or another, she was a co-founder, president, and member of the Castroville Sociedad Guadalupana, Congresso Charismatico, founded and organized the Castroville Senior Citizen’s Coronation for 15 years, and life-long member of Our Lady of Refuge Church in Castroville, California. She enjoyed traveling with family and she and Rafael would take their children and grandchildren on annual vacations. She also enjoyed gardening, attending church events, playing Canasta and going to casinos with her cousins, kids and grandkids. She received the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in 1996 for “Woman of the Year Award,” LULAC’s 1996 “Woman of the Year,” and Founder of the Castroville Senior City’s Committee. She continued her mother’s legacy of the Traditional Mexican Posada. Her passion was to give gifts to the children every December.

Maria was a loving, inspirational and compassionate Woman who opened her home and welcomed everyone. She treated all who came to her home like family. She taught us to love unconditionally. Her faith in God, her love for the Church and Family were the bedrock of her Life. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends as well as those lives whom she touched.

Maria is survived by her loving husband Rafael Jimenez, and her children Rafael, his spouse Sylvia; Rudolfo; Melecia Susie, her spouse, Huberto Celaya; Roy, his spouse, Anne Marie; Pepe, his spouse, Elsa; and Christina, her spouse, Herman Celaya; and 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Nació el 5 de diciembre de 1932 en Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, México, como hija mayor de Francisco Padilla y Melecia Cruz Padilla. María creció en el Distrito Federal, México. Estuvieron felizmente casados por 60 años y acababan de celebrar su aniversario con familiares y amigos en febrero de este año. María fue miembro de varias organizaciones de la comunidad. En un momento u otro, fue co-fundadora, presidenta y miembro de la Sociedad Guadalupana de Castroville, el Congreso Carismático, fundó y organizó la Coronación de Ciudadanos Mayores de edad de Castroville durante 15 años, y miembro de por vida de la Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Refugio en Castroville, California. Le gustaba viajar con su familia y cada año, ella y Rafael llevaban a sus hijos y nietos a viajar. Continuó el legado de su madre de la tradicional posada mexicana. Su pasión era dar regalos a los niños cada diciembre.

María fue una mujer cariñosa, inspiradora y compasiva que abrió su hogar y dio la bienvenida a todos. Trataba a todos los que llegaban a su casa como si fueran de su familia. Ella nos enseñó a amar incondicionalmente. Su fe en Dios, su amor por la Iglesia y su Familia fueron la base de su vida. Su familia, amigos y las vidas que tocó la extrañarán profundamente. A María le sobrevivieron su esposo Rafael, y sus hijos Rafael, cónyuge, Sylvia; Rudolfo; Melecia Susie, cónyuge, Huberto Celaya; Roy, cónyuge, Anne Marie; Pepe, cónyuge, Elsa; y Christina, cónyuge, Herman Celaya; y 17 nietos y 13 bisnietos, así como numerosas sobrinas, sobrinos y otros familiares.
