Obituary of Dorothy A. Walker

Dorothy A. Walker passed away December 22, 2020 at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. She was 94 years old. She was born on her family’s farm in Ohio on March 1, 1926. She went to grammar school in Ohio and when she was 13 her parents packed up the family and moved to California. She graduated from Fort Jones High School in Siskiyou County, California. She went on to Nurses training but never finished. She got married instead and had one daughter. In early 1948 she moved to Salinas and lived here the rest of her life.

Dorothy was the Matriarch of a family of strong women. In July she became the head of five living generations of strong women. She loved to party with family and friends all having a good time. She loved to travel and did so as often as she could. She thought nothing of jumping in her car and driving to Mt. Shasta to visit her friends and family. She went on several cruises and trips to Alaska, Costa Rica, Canada and cross country driving to the Dakotas. One of her favorite pastimes was taking gambling trips to Reno, Tahoe and Las Vegas.

She was a longtime member of Reveille Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Cinderella Bowling League, Social member of Salinas Golf and Country Club/ The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch, and several bunco clubs where she was known as the “Bunco Queen”. She was always ready to play a game of Cribbage and usually won the game. She also had a special knack for playing Yahtzee.

Dorothy worked at several bookkeeping jobs, starting at Sears and Roebuck, Mc Mahans Furniture, Consolidated Bag Co., Cochran Equipment, Fat City Cattle Company and finally Eckhart Seed Company for 38 years where she worked until she was 87 years old.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Lorraine Goade and son-in-law Larry Robison of Salinas, granddaughters Karen Stein of Yuma, AZ and Kandace Jones (Brian) of Salinas. Great grandchildren Frankie Montellano (Peyton Olivarria) and Joshua Jones, Salinas. Halle Gorman, Fresno, Rhett Gorman, Salinas, Great-great granddaughter Aaliyah Smith, Fresno. Step grandchildren Susie Vertin (Mike), Los Gatos, Gary P. Goade (Christy), Salinas, Erin Smith (Mark) Salinas and Leslie Robison, Salinas. Step great grandchildren Jessica Smith, Salinas, Tyler Smith, Salinas, Grace Vertin and Annie Vertin Los Gatos, Step great-great grandchildren Jordan and Jenna Osborn, Salinas and Jaxson Schneider . Salinas. Nieces Andrea Hammett of El Sobrante and Helen Diehl, Texas. She loved her family dearly and she will be deeply missed.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, Frank Walker, brother Robert A Davis, her sister Georgia Wells, her parents Andrew and Dorothy Blanche Davis, son in law, Gary D. Gaode, and nephew Michael Wells.

Due to Covid restrictions there will be no service at this time. There will be a celebration of life at a later date when permitted.
