Nieves Escobar

Obituary of Nieves G. Escobar

Nieves Escobar, at the age of 93, joined our Father in Heaven on December 1st, 2022. She was surrounded by family.

Nieves was born on December 9, 1928, to Remigio and Freda Gonzales, in Chicago, Illinois. She eventually found her way to California and made Salinas her home in the 1950s.

At the age of 33, she married the love of her life, Jose T. Escobar. They went on to have three children– Manuel, Freda, and Lorenzo.

Nieves lived a life full of generosity, sacrifice, and unconditional love for her family. She loved being surrounded by friends and family from all walks of life. Her door was always open for those she loved, and a place was always set at her table for those who needed one. She loved music, particularly Vicente Fernandez, and loved to dance with her grandchildren at every opportunity. She was an amazing cook and found peace in her garden where she grew much of her own fruits and vegetables (as well as sharing them with others). She was an amazing mother, Nana, sister, aunt, and friend.  Her strength and perseverance were unwavering, and she overcame mountains in her life with a fierce, yet humble heart. The sparkle in her eye never dimmed, but only grew brighter when she looked at all her grandchildren.

Nieves is preceded in death by her husband, Jose T. Escobar, her youngest son, Lorenzo G. Escobar, her parents Remigio and Freda Gonzales, her brothers Carlos Gonzales and Frank Gonzales, and her sisters, Catalina Villasenor and Josie Esquivel. She is survived by her son, Manuel G. Escobar, her daughter, Freda G. Escobar-Furtado, her sisters Enedina Soto and Raquel Gonzales, along with much-loved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-grandson.

The Rosary Service and Viewing will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 11th at Healey Mortuary in Salinas. Funeral services will be held the following day, Monday, December 12th at 10:00 a.m. Burial Services will proceed to the Garden of Memories Memorial Park in Salinas. All who can attend are welcome, just as Nieves welcomed all who knew her.
