Obituary of Clarence Weiss

Clarence enlisted in the Coast Guard on June 17, 1942, as a First Class Motor Machinist Mate aboard the USS Bittersweet. He was discharged on August 17, 1945. On September 1, 1950, Clarence was called back as a First Class Engineman aboard the USS LST-715 (later known as USNS DeKalb County). During his service throughout the Korean War, he evacuated troops at Enchon, Wonson Harbor. He was ultimately discharged from active duty on October 18, 1951 and was a "Stand-by Reservist" during Vietnam. He retired as Chief on September 1, 1974, fulfilling 26 years of dedicated service. After serving in the military, he lived and resided in Salinas for over 20 years. He enjoyed talking with people when he was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. He was the eldest volunteer for over two years. Clarence had wonderful memories of 56 years with his first wife, Beverly. He thouroughly enjoyed travleing with his current wife, Thelma, of 17 years, in their motor home.
