Obituary of Kenneth Shields

Kenneth J. Shields passed away on August 13, 2009 in Salinas. He was born August 4, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the second son and last child of parents Donald and Nellie Shields. Kenneth graduated from Sough High School in 1960 and won the State Championship in baseball as a short stop. In 1961, he signed with the New York Mets’ Farm Team for a season. Soon after he moved to Salinas and attended Hartnell College. While in college he was employed Monterey Boys Ranch and later worked at Firestone Tire Company as a Tire Inspector Supervisor. He later returned to college at the University of San Francisco to pursue a Degree in Criminal Justice and after he graduated, he worked as a Probation Officer and a Court Investigator for the County of Monterey. Kenneth had a love for children and began working with high school students as a Campos Supervisor and Baseball Coach and retired in 2004. He also enjoyed teaching youngster’s golf, baseball and various other sports. He is survived by his wife Cheryl (Cher) Shields, his older brother Donald Jr. of Reno, Nevada, his son Vincent Donald Shields, daughter-in-law Kethura Shields and granddaughters, Illora, Ilyssa, Iliza of Livermore, California.
