Obituary of Mary Jane Holmes

Mary Jane Crawford Holmes, 82, a retired librarian and active member of Monterey historical societies, died Saturday September 25, 2010 at 1:20am. Born January 13, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, she first moved to the Peninsula in 1941. She graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1945 and attended Stanford University and San Francisco College for Women. Mrs. Holmes worked at the Monterey City Library, Ft. Ord Library, Pacific Grove High School and was a librarian/college counselor at York School in the 1970's. After retirement, she became interested in genealogy. She was a member of the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne, Magna Charta Dames, Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Co. of Boston. She was Governor of the Monterey Bay Colony of Mayflower Descendants, Regent of the Commodore Sloat Chapter DAR, Chairman of the National Society of Colonial Dames Monterey Peninsula Committee, and Board member of the Carmel Woman's Club. She is survived by a daughter, Betty of Santa Cruz; sons, James of San Carlos and Robert, with wife Arlene, of San Diego; and two grandchildren, Jimmy and Chris. Her husband, Robert, died in 1990. At her request, no services will be held. Inurnment will be at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove.
