Obituary of Matthew Haworth
Matthew Tommy Haworth or "Papa" as he was so lovingly known, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 4:29 PM. He was surrounded by four generations of the family that he cherished so much.
Matthew was born to Mary Elizabeth and John Henry Haworth of Oklahoma. As a young child the family moved across country and settled in Shafter, California. Matthew was one of eleven children born in the Haworth family.
Matthew married the love of his life, Betty Lou Fisher on May 17, 1953, and began a love journey of 55 years. Together, they had two daughters, Linda Maureen and Jacquetta Lynn. In later years, James Stout was accepted into the family as the son he never had.
From 1953 to 1955, Matthew served in the United States Army. Known for his strong sense of Country and love of America. He was a lifetime member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars.
He was known for his strong work ethic, working many long, hard hours, swamping potatoes in the San Joaquin Valley. Upon moving to the Salinas Valley in 1961, he continued working in produce as a truck driver and well as a fork lift operator. In his later years, he enjoyed putting up signs for real estate companies in the Prunedale area.
Matt's hobbies were planting fruit trees, yard sales, playing cards with family and friends, and listening to Country music. Without fail, Papa nicknamed all those he loved. To those of us who knew him, his life was a mix of jingles and rhymes.
