Obituary of Apolonia Nieves

Apolonia "Lonnie" Martinez Nieves, 74, longtime resident of Salinas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 19, 2011 in her apartment around 3:20AM. She was born in the small town of Santa Cruz in the Philippines. Lonnie lived her life as a daughter, sister, sister-in-law, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend. She was happily married to Bernard Nieves for 45 years. Lonnie was a volunteer for over 10 years at Natividad Medical Center. She loved to travel around the world; she's been to Europe a couple of times and had visited the Philippines almost very year. When her husband was still alive, they drove from California to Georgia and enjoyed the different sceneries of the United States. Lonnie Just a year ago, she was diagnosed with advanced appendix cancer. She was courageously undergoing treatment for the last six months, but had lost the battle. The good Lord took her life very soon, but the family is relieved that she in now in a better place. She is survived by her six children; Letty Aninzo, Edwin Nieves, Wilma Mayo, Rene Nieves, Rommel Nieves, and Bernard Nieves, Jr. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Nieves in 2000. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 1-9pm with a Rosary Recital at 7pm all at Healey Mortuary 405 N. Sanborn Rd. Salinas, CA 93905. A Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, June 23, 2011 10am at Sacred Heart Church 22 Stone St. Salinas, CA 93901. A Chapel Blessing will also take place on Saturday, June 25, 2011 12pm at the Healey Mortuary Chapel. Burial to follow Chapel Blessing at the Garden of Memories Cemetery 850 Abbott St. Salinas, CA 93901.
