Obituary of George Gilliam

George "Junior" Gilliam, Jr. of Salinas, age 80, passed away peacefully surrounded with love on Friday, April 24, 2009, after a brief illness. George was born on November 8, 1928 in Charleston, Arkansas to George Gilliam, Sr. and Hattie Barnes Gilliam. He was a resident of Salinas for 64 years. George moved here at the age of 16 traveling by train with his parents and three sisters. The family arrived here on April 6, 1945, joining other relatives living here. After 30 years of service, George retired in 1994 from Gieg's Truck Terminal. He missed working with the public so he worked part-time at Curtis' Beacon on North Main Street. He retired again in 1999. He and his wife attended Northside Assembly of God Church, and enjoyed visiting with family and friends and pulling jokes on them. George was a member of the Moose Lodge for a number of years. After retiring, he volunteered at the Food Bank for Montery County as well as Meals on Wheels. He is survived by wife of 43 years Faye Gilliam of Salinas daughter Mayanna Morris of Salinas sons Bert Little of Salinas Chris (LeeAnne) Gilliam of Jackson sisters Rella (Doug) Young of Sonora Mary (Mike)Showalter of Wisconsin 6 grandsons 1 great-granddaughter 1 great-grandson 2 nieces 9 nephews along with other loving relatives preceded in death by father George Gilliam, Sr. in 1951. mother Hattie Barnes Gilliam in 1968. sister Billie Moranda in 1991. sister Gwen Rosewski in 2001. After Funeral Services, a Gathering will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall located at: 270 Rianda Street in Salinas.
