Let's talk Bingo.
Grandma Yanda was going to visit Las Vegas, and Jen and I were going to go meet here there. We wanted to show her a good time in Vegas, but what do you do with an 80+ year old Grandma? We couldn't take her to the night clubs, or as many Filipinos call it "Disco Disco". We couldn't bunjee jump off the top of the Stratosphere. So what do we do? We took Grandma to go play Bingo.
But this isn't your ordinary kind of Bingo. This is Casino Bingo. Usually in Bingo you get a card with a 5x5 square. And you have to fill one of 25 squares if your letter and number are progressively called. Sounds easy, right?
Not so with Casino Bingo. Yes, you have the 5x5 square, but multiply this by six cards per game, that is 150 squares to keep track of! I was daunted. They call a number, B4, and Jen and I would be hunting for the number with or dopper. Dop...Dop...Dop....
Here Grandma Yanda is, dopping away faster than Jen and I put together. Dop, Dop, Dop. Grandma was practically done dopping before our first dop.
I thought we would need to keep an eye on Grandma to make sure she got all the correct numbers dopped. It was the other way around! She was pointing out the numbers Jen and I missed. Crazy.
As the Bingo game progressed, the patterns to win got complex. Instead of one line to win, you needed two lines vertically to win, or two lines horizontally, an x, a cross, etc...
I thought we would need to explain all these complex patterns to Grandma, but when we told her what pattern was up, she gave a look us like "I got this."
The 30 something year olds were having more difficulty than the 80 plus year old, in finding numbers on the 5x5 times 6...over 150 squares.
This reminds me of a "math" problem, more of a "math" solution, that I learned from Grandma Yanda. 4 time 3 is 12, right? Not according to Grandma Yanda.
Salinas is a small big town. Big enough where you don't know everyone, but small enough where you run into to people you do know. One day I was grocery shopping at Nob Hill, right by Grandma Yanda's house. It's now "El Super", but back then it was Nob Hill. Anyway, I spot Grandma Yanda at the produce section. They sold mangoes by the box. And she had a 4 x 3 box of Mangoes in her cart. That is room for 12 mangos. As we started talking, she nestled more mangoes in between the mangoes in the box. 4 x 3 did not equal 12, it was more like 15 to 18, heck maybe more. I don't know if Grandma was being a trickster or not, but I found it amusing and quite clever, especially from a Grandma! That's some Grandma Yanda math for you.
Anyway, back to the 5x5 squares, Bingo. This is Casino Bingo, so not only was Grandma dopping away, she had a little machine that played Bingo automatically for her. Hi tech! And on one game, unbeknownst to her, her machine hit Bingo! We let her know, and WE screamed "Bingo!"
When she got her winnings, she tried to split it with Jen and me. We were just there for the ride, so I said "it's okay" not accepting it. She insisted, I still denied. She persisted again to share her winnings with me, and a graciously accepted.
She won Bingo, and she shared her winnings with me. I was a winner, because she shared her winnings with me. Manalo po nila. Manalo na ako din, dahil ibahagi po nila sa akin.
Grandma Yanda: You won Bingo that day. Further, you have won in a another kind of Bingo.
You had a loving husband for half a century. Bingo.
You traveled the world, from the Philippines, to New York, to Germany, to Washington, to Arizona, and settling in California. Bingo.
You have 7 children, spread all over the place, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Jose, Salinas, and still call your house, Home. Bingo.
You have "mga manugang", who think of you and care for, as their very own mom. Bingo.
You have countless Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. There are so many, I can't even name them all. Bingo.
You won at the bingo of a lifetime, Life's Bingo. Manalo po kayo. Manalo na ako din, dahil ibahagi po kayo sa akin. Manalo na kami lahat din, dahil ibahagi po kayo sa amin lahat. We are screaming "Bingo!" for you. Bingo, Grandma, Bingo!

Auntie Yanda, you were always full of smiles & laughter and that's how I will always remember you. Remember the fun time we had when we were at Las Vegas airport? You kept telling me you never win. And you asked me how to win. I told you it's all about timing, attitude & plain luck. With a smile you put $2 in the turkey shooting slot machine and you lost it on a blink of an eye. You laughed. Then you asked me if you should try again. And I said only if you felt lucky. You gave me a big smile & put a $5 bill in the machine. You hit a bonus round and managed to win up to $100! The look of surprise on your face & the sound of your laughter was priceless. You won! You kept thanking me as if I had anything to do with your win. You were so funny. Although we can't hang out anymore, you will always be present in my heart & your memory will always bring a smile to my face.Thank you Auntie Yanda for being a beautiful loving person inside & out. I will miss you. Much love. Perla
